The choice between a new barrel and a regenerated one also depends on the organoleptic profile you want to impart to your wine and your available budget.
When is it worth renewal a barrique or a barrel?
Renewal means removing a few millimeters of the exhausted wood inside (which has already released its components into the wine or is clogged with tartrates) to expose the more virgin wood underneath.
Less-structured wines: If you’re looking for natural micro oxygenation without the wood flavor overpowering the fruit.
A regenerated barrel is for those who want to “round out” the wine without transforming it with more intense aromas.
More limited budget: If you need many containers but can’t afford the investment of a new one.
A regenerated barrel costs less and still offers the benefits of quality oak.
Obviously, the regeneration process, and any re-toasting, must be carried out by the expert hands of the cooper.
Regeneration of client-owned barrels and barriques: Renzi Artigiano Bottaio will evaluate the possibility of regeneration of the barrels and barriques together with the client who wishes to renew them.
Second life for the winery: If you already own quality barrels that have undergone multiple passages, regeneration allows them to be used for other production cycles instead of scrapping them.
Spirits: For those aging grappa, whiskey, or rum, regenerated or used barrels are sometimes chosen because
the wood is less aggressive and has already absorbed the aromas of the previous wine.
